Joseph Brodmann

Joseph Brodmann was born in 1763 in Eichswald Prussia. He has trained as a carpenter and then came to Vienna, where he became an apprentice to the well known organ and piano builder Hoffmann. Brodmann became a famous piano builder in the Imperial City and lived in Vienna until his death. 
The business address of the Brodmann factory was Am Glacier No 43 in the Josefstadt in Vienna (today Lenaugasse 10 in 1080 Vienna). 
He made valuable contribution and inventions to perfecting the construction of Pianos especially the soundboards of grand Pianos. Brodmann Pianos have been valued not only by Weber but by a number of well known composers such as Beethoven. Due to his technical inclination and appreciation of music, Ignaz Bösendorfer was apprenticed to the piano maker Joseph Brodmann at the age of 19. 
Joseph Brodmann died in Vienna in 1848 leaving behind the impressive sum of 125.000 gulden in his will. Ignaz Bösendorfer took over the Brodmann factory in 1828 with a starting capital of 500 Gulden.
